Guest Lecture by Johannes Schönmetz in the IBT Bachelor Program at TH Nürnberg: Practical Insights into Logistics Planning and Project Management

As part of the “Operations Management” course of Prof. Dr. Christoph Tripp in the International Business & Technology program at the Faculty of Business Administration of Technische Hochschule Nürnberg, students had the privilege of welcoming a special guest on November 19, 2025: Johannes Schönmetz, Senior Logistics & Factory Planner at the consulting firm LOGSOL GmbH.

In his lecture, Mr. Schönmetz provided a comprehensive overview of the lifecycle of a real consulting project. The project involved planning a new logistics process for a contract logistics provider responsible for the time-critical supply of production at a medical technology manufacturer with components and materials. The key challenges included a high variety of parts, diverse handling requirements, and the need for efficient and timely production supply.

The guest lecture covered the four project phases – from the initial draft to the go-live – and highlighted essential project steps. A particular highlight was the integration of an AutoStore solution, enabling space-optimized storage, retrieval, and picking of a large number of small parts. Furthermore, Mr. Schönmetz addressed the organizational and communication challenges of a project spanning more than 20 months. Topics such as project organization, risk management, and effective communication were presented in a highly practical and illustrative manner.

IBT students gained a realistic understanding of the complexity and requirements of modern logistics projects. The lecture offered valuable insights not only into technical implementation but also into the strategic aspects of project management.
