Guest lectures by Prof. Gangfeng Zhang from Zhejiang University

On 15th of April, students of the International Business program and Prof. Dr. Naiming Wei welcomed Prof. Gangfeng Zhang from Zhejiang University, China.

As part of the second semester Intercultural Communication course held by Prof. Dr. Helen Rogers, Prof. Zhang discussed aspects of communication in terms of Chinese culture with the IB students.
The lecture highlighted some key aspects, including the role of respect, specific challenges of communicating via an interpreter and verbal versus non-verbal conversation. Prof. Zhang also pointed out that China is large and diverse, meaning that different approaches were required with people from different regions. Practical business examples shared by Prof. Zhang with students supported the key learnings of the lecture.

Zhejiang University (ZJU) is one of China’s top higher education institutions, as well as one of its oldest; its roots can be traced back to 1897 and the founding of the Qiushi Academy. Located in Hangzhou – one of China’s most picturesque cities – the University is organized across seven faculties and 36 schools. It is home to 3,611 full-time faculty members, including 41 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. ZJU has 53,673 students, over 53% of whom are postgraduate students.
