The Doctoral research center - Materials & Production Engineering (PZMP) is a joint academic unit of the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (the Ohm, lead university) in cooperation with the Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) and the OTH Regensburg (OTHR).

Information about the PZMP

The PZMP incorporates research in the fields of materials science, process and production engineering, and product development. In addition to investigating problems directly related to material, component, and system development and production processes, the influence of materials on achievable product quality and their use in components and assemblies is researched both analytically and with the aid of simulation and modeling.
The aim is to develop innovative solutions related to the availability of new and efficient materials as a pre-requisite for substitution for raw materials, to increase material and process efficiency in industrial material cycles and reduce the ecological footprint, and to develop technological sovereignty and resilience of production processes.

The overarching goal of the PZMP is to facilitate joint and interdisciplinary research and doctorates along the entire value creation process. The interdisciplinary and complementary nature of the expertise of the professorial members enables significant added value in the collaboration within the center and in the supervision of doctoral research.

Regulations governing the center

The ‘Rahmenpromotionsordnung’ (RPromO, framework regulations for doctoral degrees) applies for all doctoral research centers of the university consortium comprising the Ohm, HM, and OTHR) and the ‘Fachpromotionsordnung des Promotionszentrums ‘Materialien und Produktionstechnik’ (FPromO PZMP, the degree regulations for PZMP doctorates) form the regulatory basis for the awarding of Dr.-Ing. and Dr. rer. nat. doctoral degrees.

Information for Prospective Doctoral Candidates

Pursuant to § 18 (1) line 1 of the RPromO, to be accepted as a doctoral researcher at the PZMP you must provide evidence of

  • a master’s degree (from a university or university of applied sciences) or
  • a ‘Diplom’ degree (from a university) or
  • having completed a first state examination

in engineering or natural sciences with a final grade point average of 2.0 or better and a master’s thesis with a final grade of 1.7 or better (see § 7 (2) of the FPromO).

A professorial member of the PZMP must be the first supervisor of your research project (see § 13 (4) of the PRomO). In addition, your research topic must be aligned with the PZMP’s research profile.

The supervision agreement provides the foundation for the working relationship between the doctoral candidate and their supervisor(s). The supervision agreement ‘is intended to provide transparency in the expectations, responsibilities, and timeframe of the relationship between doctoral candidates and supervisors’ (translation of DFG - 1.90 - ‘Empfelungen für das Erstellen von Betreuungsvereinbarungen’) to support the planning and conduct of the doctoral project, and to foster a trusting, constructive, and transparent collaboration at the highest academic level.

The terms of the supervision agreement should be agreed jointly by you and your supervisor and set down in writing.

The basis of a doctoral research project is the research proposal which includes a structured research plan and timeframe. The research proposal should outline the proposed research topic, the current state of research in the field, the objectives and expected contribution of the project to the field, and the planned methodology. Its purpose is to present the proposed doctoral project in a clear, concise, and well-structured manner (see § 20 (2) line 1 (5) of the PRomO). Prospective doctoral candidates often prepare their research proposal during the orientation phase; it is not required before contacting a professor affiliated with the PZMP.

You must use the form provided to request admission.

The following documents must be submitted with the request for admission (see also §20 (2) of the RPromO):

  • a CV in German or English; the CV should outline your academic background and educational history,
  • official certified copies of certificates, diplomas, and transcripts (incl. diploma supplement) from all previous tertiary education and from your university entrance qualification; for academic credentials earned abroad, submit official certified copies of the original documents together with official translations,
  • supervision agreement,
  • a brief written research proposal (‘Exposé’) in German or English for the proposed independent doctoral project,
  • a joint statement by you and your supervisor setting out the rationale for the intended doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing. requires an engineering research topic and the application of engineering research methods).

The request for admission should be signed and submitted together will all required documents at the PZMP Office. If you are not able to bring your application to the office in person, you may send your application by mail. It is recommended that you send your application by registered post.

The doctoral committee reviews the application to determine if the requirements for admission as a doctoral candidate are met and whether your research proposal is aligned with the PZMP’s research profile. You will be informed of the doctoral committee’s decision in writing. Please note that there may be conditions associated with your admission.

If admitted, you will be officially listed as a doctoral candidate in the PZMP.

Professorial Membership

To ensure academically rigorous doctoral research in promising fields of study, professorial members are accepted based on defined criteria set out in the implementing regulation for the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (‘Ausführungsverordnung zum Bayerischen Hochschulinnovationsgesetz) (see § 19 (2) and (3) of the AVBayHIG). 

As universities of applied sciences have gained the right to award doctorates, doctoral candidates who meet the eligibility requirements and have established a supervision agreement may pursue their doctorate directly within a doctoral research center of the three partner universities.

Professors who are interested in becoming a professorial member of a doctoral research center should send an email to promotion@th-nuernberg.de for more information.

  • Professor sends completed membership application, unsigned, as a Word file to the doctoral research center office of their home university (regardless of the lead university of the respective doctoral center).
  • The office reviews the information provided in the application against relevant records, seeking further clarification where required.
  • Professor, research services department, and doctoral research center office sign the application (research services department and the doctoral research office confirm the accuracy of the information).
  • Doctoral research center office forwards the application to the head of the respective doctoral research center.
  • The head forwards the application to the body of professorial members (the ‘Kollegium’). A joint opinion is issued by the Kollegium and the head.
  • The Steering Council (‘Lenkungsrat’) receives the application and opinion issued by the doctoral research center Kollegium and leadership and decides whether the candidate professor is accepted for membership.
