The Doctoral research center - Energy Engineering (PZET) is a joint academic unit of the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (the Ohm, lead university) in cooperation with the Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) and the OTH Regensburg (OTHR).

Information about the PZET

The PZET brings together the research strengths of the three universities in the field of energy engineering to promote the development of early-career researchers and enable joint research projects.

Reflecting the wide-ranging nature of energy engineering as a field, four key research areas have been established at the center:

  • Electrical energy technology (power supply)
  • Thermal energy technology (heating supply)
  • Chemical energy technology (hydrogen and Power-to-X)
  • Energy sector integration (overarching theme)

The participating institutes and professorial members provide comprehensive coverage of all relevant research areas. The interdisciplinary collaboration across the four research areas, combined with the PZET’s guiding principles and organisational structure promote close cooperation between the universities to support doctoral projects.

The joint research strategy encompasses the investigation and development of processes, methods, and technologies for a sustainable and innovative energy supply across all sectors and contributes to shaping the transition towards a future-oriented energy system.

The overall goal is to strengthen collaboration in the field of energy engineering, pool research activities, and provide an excellent environment for doctoral development and research.

Regulations governing the center

The ‘Rahmenpromotionsordnung’ (RPromO, framework regulations for doctoral degrees) applies for all doctoral research centers of the university consortium comprising the Ohm, HM, and OTHR) and the ‘Fachpromotionsordnung des Promotionszentrums ‘Energietechnik’ (FPromO PZET, the degree regulations for PZET doctorates) form the regulatory basis for the awarding of Dr.-Ing. doctoral degrees.

Information for Prospective Doctoral Candidates

Pursuant to § 18 (1) line 1 of the RPromO, to be accepted as a doctoral researcher at the PZET you must provide evidence of

  • a master’s degree (from a university or university of applied sciences) or
  • a ‘Diplom’ degree (from a university) or
  • having completed a first state examination

in engineering or natural sciences with a final grade point average of 2.0 or better (see § 7 (2) of the FPromO).

A professorial member of the PZET must be the first supervisor of your research project (see § 13 (4) of the PRomO). In addition, your research topic must be aligned with the PZET’s research profile.

You can find a list of all professorial members of the center (the ‘Kollegium’) with their respective research areas under the section ‘Governing Structures and Committees’. If you are interested in pursuing a doctorate, please feel free to contact the relevant professor directly.

The supervision agreement provides the foundation for the working relationship between the doctoral candidate and their supervisor(s). The supervision agreement ‘is intended to provide transparency in the expectations, responsibilities, and timeframe of the relationship between doctoral candidates and supervisors’ (translation of DFG - 1.90 - ‘Empfelungen für das Erstellen von Betreuungsvereinbarungen’) to support the planning and conduct of the doctoral project, and to foster a trusting, constructive, and transparent collaboration at the highest academic level.

The terms of the supervision agreement should be agreed jointly by you and your supervisor and set down in writing.

The basis of a doctoral research project is the research proposal which includes a structured research plan and timeframe. The research proposal should outline the proposed research topic, the current state of research in the field, the objectives and expected contribution of the project to the field, and the planned methodology. Its purpose is to present the proposed doctoral project in a clear, concise, and well-structured manner (see § 20 (2) line 1 (5) of the PRomO). Prospective doctoral candidates often prepare their research proposal during the orientation phase; it is not required before contacting a professor affiliated with the PZET. 

Under ‘Admission documents’, you will find a template for a research proposal and guidelines that can help you in preparing your research proposal.

You must use the form provided to request admission.

The following documents must be submitted with the request for admission (see also §20 (2) of the RPromO):

  • a CV in German or English; the CV should outline your academic background and educational history,
  • official certified copies of certificates, diplomas, and transcripts (incl. diploma supplement) from all previous tertiary education and from your university entrance qualification; for academic credentials earned abroad, submit official certified copies of the original documents together with official translations,
  • supervision agreement,
  • a brief written research proposal (‘Exposé’) in German or English for the proposed independent doctoral project,

The request for admission should be signed and submitted together will all required documents at the PZET Office. If you are not able to bring your application to the office in person, you may send your application by mail. It is recommended that you send your application by registered post.

The doctoral committee reviews the application to determine if the requirements for admission as a doctoral candidate are met and whether your research proposal is aligned with the PZET’s research profile. You will be informed of the doctoral committee’s decision in writing. Please note that there may be conditions associated with your admission.

If admitted, you will be officially listed as a doctoral candidate at the PZET.

Doctoral development programme - course recognition

To provide equitable recognition of coursework for all doctoral candidates, as a general rule only courses offered at level 8 (doctoral level) of the German Qualifications Framework (DQR, based on the European Qualifications Framework, EQR) are recognised for the doctoral development programme requirements. Discontinuing doctoral studies at the PZET

If you decide to stop pursuing your doctorate at the PZET, please complete the template letter (below), have your supervisor sign it, and send it to the PZET office (an email is sufficient): jacqueline.catalano@th-nuernberg.de.

Professorial Membership

To ensure academically rigorous doctoral research in promising fields of study, professorial members are accepted based on defined criteria set out in the implementing regulation for the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (‘Ausführungsverordnung zum Bayerischen Hochschulinnovationsgesetz) (see § 19 (2) and (3) of the AVBayHIG). 

As universities of applied sciences have gained the right to award doctorates, doctoral candidates who meet the eligibility requirements and have established a supervision agreement may pursue their doctorate directly within a doctoral research center of the three partner universities.

Professors who are interested in becoming a professorial member of a doctoral research center should send an email to promotion@th-nuernberg.de for more information. We will email you the application form.

  • Professor sends completed membership application, unsigned, as a Word file to the doctoral research center office of their home university (regardless of the lead university of the respective doctoral center).
  • The office reviews the information provided in the application against relevant records, seeking further clarification where required.
  • Professor, research services department, and doctoral research center office sign the application (research services department and the doctoral research office confirm the accuracy of the information).
  • Doctoral research center office forwards the application to the head of the respective doctoral research center.
  • The head forwards the application to the body of professorial members (the ‘Kollegium’). A joint opinion is issued by the Kollegium and the head.
  • The Steering Council (‘Lenkungsrat’) receives the application and opinion issued by the doctoral research center Kollegium and leadership and decides whether the candidate professor is accepted for membership.

Martin Regnet

Martin’s research focuses on investigating the influence of manufacturing and operational factors on the magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials in electrical machine engineering. His work is in the field of electrical power engineering under the supervision of Prof. Armin Dietz at the Ohm.

Georg Woywod

Under the supervision of Prof. Marek Galek at the HM, Georg is investigating solid-state transformers for integrating renewable energy sources to medium-voltage grids in maritime environments.

Kieran Oswald

Kieran is supervised by Prof. Oliver Bohlen at the HM and is researching monitoring and operational strategies for redox flow batteries.

Thorsten Riedl

Thorsten is working at the Ohm on model-based approaches to monitoring the condition of mechatronic drive trains in medical imaging systems using internal control variables. His doctoral supervisor is Prof. Armin Dietz

Elisa Sanchez (PZET doctoral candidates’ representative)

Under the supervision of Prof. Axel Busboom at the HM, Elisa is researching cavitation and long-term efficiency in hydropower turbines using machine learning methods.

Sandra Plötz

Sandra’s research project is titled, ‘Teilautomatisierte Fehlererkennung und Untersuchungen zur Durchführbarkeit von online-Monitoring mittels FRA an Drehstrommaschinen’ (Semi-automated Fault Detection and Investigations into the Feasibility of Online Monitoring using FRA in Three-phase Electrical Machines). She is working under the supervision of Prof. Stephanie Uhrig at the HM. 

Georg Fabry

Under Profs. Oliver Bohlen and Herber Palm at the HM, Georg is working on the evaluation of various application-oriented parameterisation strategies for electrochemical battery models. 

Alexander Meisinger

Alexander is analysing competitive, climate-neutral energy partnerships and energy import instruments for industry in Germany and the European Union. He is supervised by Prof. Michael Sterner at the OTH Regensburg. 

Sebastian Weiss

Sebastian is investigating the automated self-testing of power generating systems, energy storage systems, and controllable loads to enable continuous compliance monitoring under the supervision of Prof. Georg Kerber at the HM. 

Lena Birkner

Lena’s research focuses on both reversible and irreversible catalyst degradation in hydrogen-air PEM fuel cells using operando isopotential spectroscopy under the supervision of Prof. Maik Eichelbaum at the Ohm. 

Susanne Thiel

Susanne is developing tests and analytical methods for the accelerated degradation of hydrogen PEM fuel cells for use in heavy-duty commercial vehicles under the supervision of Prof. Maik Eichelbaum at the Ohm. 

Michael Heberl

Michael’s research at the OTH Regensburg, under the supervision of Prof. Michael Sterner, focuses on the techno-economic and environmental aspects of PtX processes.
