The bachelor's degree programme in Social Data Science & Communication uniquely links skills in data science and statistics with the know-how to integrate data into social, economic, and political contexts.  It is called social data science, because the evaluation and processing of data not only requires skills in statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, and mathematics, but also in economics and socio-political decision-making. And these data and their evaluation need to be visualised, arranged to be interactive, and communicated – that’s the communication part.

Social Data Science & Communication is an undergraduate degree programme and is unique among German university of applied sciences. It is a full-time, on-campus programme.

Companies, organisations, associations, government agencies, and NGOs increasingly need specialists who combine expertise in computer science, statistics, and social science methodologies to derive actionable insights from data and support informed decision-making. In modern industrial societies, success depends not on collecting ever larger volumes of data, but on analysing data with the right methods and tools and deriving meaningful conclusions in order to create value in specific fields of application. In the Social Data Science & Communication programme, students gain a solid education in statistics, data science, economic and political science, as well as communication and data visualisation. This distinguishes the programme from traditional computer science programmes, specialised AI programmes, and from business information systems and financial-mathematics programmes. In particular, the societal dimensions of data science, such as ethics and gender issues, and the integration of industry-specific perspectives with technology assessment, democracy, and public policy, provide distinctive features that set the programme apart. You will gain the knowledge and analytical skills needed to bridge the fields of social science and data science. The programme builds on students’ interest in mathematics, and provides knowledge in programming, artificial intelligence, and database systems. Graduates pursue careers in companies, start-ups, non-profit organisations, research institutions, and the public sector. In addition to their expertise in data science, they are equipped with the social and communication skills needed to act as intermediaries between data analytics and business, policy, and societal decision-making.
