Curriculum vitae

Since 2017, Prof. Dr. Roland Zimmermann is Professor at the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg within the faculty of business administration. His teaching topics focus on Information Systems as well as on Analytics (Statistics) which he aggregates under the larger topic of "Data Literacy".

Prof. Zimmermann focuses on methods to develop analytic architectures for data-centric management. The concept of 'Data Literacy' consists of five main competencies required to create analytical systems: business-driven design of indicator systems, data management, quantitative analytics and planning, visualization and interaction with analytical results as well as security and privacy issues of data usage.

Before entering the academic world, Prof. Zimmermann spent more than ten years with a specialized German Business Intelligence software company where he was responsible with his team for Business Development and Partner Management. During this time he managed selected key customers on an international level with a special focus on the mobility sector. He developed successful new business models based on analytic solutions with implementation partners as well as with international technology partners such as Microsoft, IBM or Oracle.

Research

The research focus is on the design of analytical IT systems: Data Literacy, Information Design, conceptualization of integrated analytics solutions and Machine Learning in various application fields are at the core of research. Current topics include knowledge graphs and natural language processing for technology and innovation management as well as Synthetic Reasoning for Business Intelligence Applications.

Prof. Zimmermann graduated in business administration at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg with a focus on Information Systems, Logistics and Controlling. He did his PhD within a research program of the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) on "Agent-based Supply Network Event Management". In 2006 he received a PhD award from the German Staedtler-Stiftung. The agent-based approach has become even more relevant today with the advent of Internet-of-Things and Industry 4.0 approaches.

Since then, he has been an active publisher with various international publications. His focus shifted during his years in the Business Intelligence industry to topics of logistics and IT-services analytics, data mining solutions and BI-as-a-Service solutions.
