Planning your stay at the Ohm

Visa

For entry to Germany, guest researchers will usually need a visa. Citizens of EU and EEA countries do not require a visa. Please look into the current visa conditions early on in the process.

To apply for a visa, individuals must provide various documents (e.g. passport, visa request form, documentation of insurance) and, in addition, international researchers will usually be required to provide the following documents from the hosting Faculty:

  • Official invitation
  • Hosting agreement

In addition, the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg also concludes a guest contract with each guest researcher. The hosting Faculty will provide you the guest contract.

Please be sure to be in touch with your hosting Faculty early on to arrange for the preparation of these documents.

Information for international researchers

  • Health insurance
International researchers must have health insurance cover for the entire duration of their stay in Germany. For stays up to 90 days, a travel insurance is usually adequate.
  • Liability insurance
Private liability insurance is stipulated in the guest contract. It protects against possible damage to third parties that may occur during research activities, especially when working in the laboratory. As liability for accidental damages is generally applicable in Germany, this insurance cover is very important.

Combined insurance products
There are insurance products that combine multiple areas of cover, for example, health, accident, and liability insurance in one package. An example is the DAAD collective insurance, that is designed specifically for international researchers and guests at academic institutions.

Accommodation

It can be challenging to find suitable accommodation in Nuremberg. Therefore, we recommend you start looking for accommodation early on.

  • Short-term stays: For short stays, click here for a list of recommended hotels.
  • Longer stays (up to three months): For longer stays, the Ohm offers accommodations in its own university guest rooms, which are located on campus. More information about the guest rooms is available on this website.
