“Zeugnisanerkennung” at the Ohm (recognition of academic credentials (certificates and diplomas))

If you want to enrol in a bachelor's degree programme in Germany, you will need a university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung - HZB). A HZB confirms that your education has qualified you to study at a German university. Usually, this is your secondary school leaving certificate. But depending on where you went to secondary school, there may be additional requirements (like coursework) or entrance examinations.

Not all foreign school leaving certificates are equivalent to a German HZB. Therefore, all foreign academic credentials must be reviewed and recognised by the Ohm as a university entrance qualification.

There are two ways to request recognition of your foreign academic credentials:

  • During the application period (2 May - 15 September): Upload your credentials as part of the application process in the online application portal, StudyOhm. No separate request is required.
  • During the rest of the year (1 October - 30 April): Submit a request for recognition of foreign academic credentials with all required documents. The form for this request will be published here on the website in September.

The documents you submit with your request must be scanned (in full) and saved in one PDF file. Please be sure the scans are of high quality and legible!

Please note: The evaluation is always based on original documents in the official language. An official translation never substitutes for the original.

You must submit the following documents for recognition of your academic credentials during the application period in StudyOhm:

  • A CV (include information about the time period you were enrolled in school, including instruction and any training periods)
  • Passport or personal ID (if you have more than one citizenship, please upload scans of the pages with your picture, name, and signature of all passports)
  • Legally attested photocopy of your school leaving certificates (diplomas, transcripts) including the names of all subjects and respective grades with a certified translation (if the original is not in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, or Romanian)
  • Applicants with certificates from China, India, and Vietnam: APS - digitally signed certificate (“DigZert”)
  • if available: “Anerkennungsbescheid” from the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg
  • if available: “Zeugnisanerkennung” from the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle für den Freistaat Bavaria or “ZAB-Bescheid”
  • if applicable: Pre-university year (e.g., Iran)
  • if applicable: University entrance examinations from your home country (e.g., Chile, Greece, Colombia, Mongolia, Iran, Spain, Turkey)
  • if applicable: Legally attested photocopy of all pages of your university (or other higher education) transcripts or diplomas, if completed, including the names of all subjects, respective grades, and the grading system of the higher education institution, with a certified translation (if the original is not in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, or Romanian)
  • if applicable: FSP assessment examination and certificates from abroad (for India: including the grading system) and a translation

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

If you have an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, upload the following documents in StudyOhm with your application:

  • IB diploma including a transcript (with subjects and grades)
  • IB Results Summary covering all four semesters (original document, issued by the international school)

If you have not yet received your final IB diploma/IB results, request an official Transcript of Grades from the IBO Cardiff/UK office as a provisional certificate. More information about that process and costs is available on the IBO website.

Legal attests are required for documents from all non-EU/EEA countries (excepting: Australia, Canada, Japan, Moldavia, New Zealand, South America, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and USA).

Legal attests can be issued by the following authorities: German embassies, consulates, or, if available, through an apostille. Certification of copies must be based on original documents. If files can be verified online, (e.g. certificates from Turkey, South America), the legal attests do not need to be uploaded.

Applicants, who are still in Cameroon, must have their certified copies made by the local police.

In Germany, official certifications (legal attests) may be obtained from any public body that bears an official seal. Such bodies include:

  • Local government offices
  • “Landkreise” and administrative authorities - for example, mayors or civic leaders (Bürgermeister, Ortsvorsteher), city administrative offices, city halls, and municipal administrative offices
  • Courts and notaries

Certificates that are originally issued in the following languages do not need to be translated:

English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian und Spanish.

Translations must be of the original certificate and not translations of a copy. This must be attested by the translator or translation office. It must also be noted which language the translation was made from (original language).

Translations from abroad must be legalised by the relevant embassy or consulate or prepared by a translator who is sworn in the Federal Republic of Germany (“vereidigten Übersetzer”).

Country-specific information

Applicants who are applying with academic credentials from a Chinese, Vietnamese, or Indian secondary school or university, need a certificate from the respective Academic Evaluation Center (Akademische Prüfstelle - APS). This applies for all degree programmes, and for further educational offers, e.g., “Studienkolleg” or German courses.

The APS certificate and all school or university certificates that were assessed by the APS (transcripts incl. grades/marks, and if applicable, final certificate/diplomas and grading system of the university) must be uploaded in the original language and possibly with a translation.

If you have not received a digitally signed APS certificate or a digitally certified APS confirmation (“DigZert”), you must submit the original APS confirmation / APS certificate by postal mail to us. Send it to the following address:

Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm
Abt. IAS-ZA
Keßlerplatz 12
90489 Nuremberg, Germany

When is an APS confirmation not required?

  • Applicants with documents from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan do not need to submit a confirmation from the Academic Evaluation Center.

  • Applicants who have passed a FSP assessment examination at a “Studienkolleg”, do not need to submit an APS confirmation with their application.
  • Applicants, who are already living in the Federal Republic of Germany, must submit a current “Meldebescheinigung” that is not older than 3 months, with their uploaded documents.
  • Applicants who have Indian, Chinese, or Vietnamese citizenship and have an international school leaving certificate, such as an IB Diploma or General Certificate of Education - Advanced Level, do not have to go through the APS process.

A US high school diploma alone is not equivalent to a university entrance qualification in Germany.

Additional coursework is required to meet the requirements of a HZB in Germany, for example, exams from the Advanced Placement Program or two years of study at a recognised university. If you do not meet the requirements of a HZB, you will have to go through the “Studienkolleg”.

You must upload the following documents with your application in StudyOhm (as a PDF with good quality):

  • High school diploma
  • Official high school transcript (grades 9-12), indicating your unweighted cumulative GPA, with the school’s seal and the registrar’s signature.
  • AP exams: Score Report for the AP exams, issued by the College Board A report of the results that is issued by the high school is not sufficient. The AP exams must have been sat while you were enrolled in high school.
  • If you have university coursework: Official transcript from the university that includes all coursework done in the USA and, if earned, your diploma for your associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Information about how to submit documents outside of the application period will be available here in September.
