Mi casa es tu casa - a cultural exchange programme at the Ohm

The “Mi casa es tu casa - Zu Gast bei Freunden” project offers international students at the Ohm the opportunity to get to know staff at the university and their families.

The Ohm’s International Office connects international students with Ohm staff each semester. Families and students are connected to organise meetings where they can converse, arrange more meetings, and establish longer-term contact.

During the semester, many matched-pairs go on excursions in the region, cook together, or visit cultural events. The activities allow participants to gain insight into typical German life and often allow real friendships to grow.

Information for host families

International students should feel welcome when they arrive and during their time in Nuremberg and gain a positive and friendly impression of Germany. So students can have an opportunity to have a closer look into life and culture in Germany besides their studies at the Ohm, the International Office welcomes contact from interested members of staff, who are interested in intercultural exchange with students.

Aims of the project

The project is designed to:

  • support the integration of international students,
  • provide Ohm staff an opportunity to gain intercultural experience,
  • create encounters that yield enriching conversations, new perspectives, and long-term contacts.

Communication should not be an obstacle, as students speak English well and often can speak basic German.

The process

After the initial phase, all participants will receive the contact information of their matched partners and can correspond directly with each other to arrange a first meeting.

The extent and form of the meetings is completely flexible – meeting at your home to cook, an excursion to the surrounding areas, a walk through the old city center ... it is up to the participants.

Scheduling is also flexible.
Matched-pairs can meet weekly, monthly, or just a few times each semester – each pair can decide together what suits them best.
