The Industrial Engineering and Management master’s degree programme is aimed at engineers with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering or related courses of study who would like to further deepen their knowledge and skills in the subject area of industrial production. This programme can be studied in a part-time model, which makes it well suited for professionals.

The curriculum ranges from production development to business operations. Topics include: industrial engineering, lean production, supply chain management, new production technologies, digitalisation of industrial processes, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The programme offers advanced study in the Simulation and Management specialisations.

  • The interdisciplinary orientation of technical and business management content in the field of production is a unique selling point of this course.
  • The degree programme is designed as a part-time course with a standard period of study of 6 semesters. In order to facilitate part-time study, most of the course components are available digitally and/or online. In addition, the compact timetable is designed so that all face-to-face or synchronous components are offered on two days (Thursday afternoon and Friday).
  • Students wishing to take the degree programme in full-time mode can also obtain all course credits in 3 semesters, as all components are offered without timetable overlaps or space restrictions. (Note: as this is a part-time degree programme, it is not eligible for federal education assistance (Bafög), even if studied in full-time mode.)
  • The language of instruction is mainly German, with some subjects in English.

The admission requirements for the Industrial Engineering and Management master’s degree programme are as follows:

  1. Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree or Diplom in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or an equivalent degree (equivalent degrees are listed in this pdf - in German) with 210 credits and a final grade point average of at least 2.7. There is currently no numerus clausus (NC).
  2. Documentation of relevant professional practice in the field of mechanical engineering as part of a university degree or equivalent for at least 16 weeks or at least one year outside of university.
  3. Language skills sufficient for the degree programme according to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). These are: Documentation of level B2 language skills in English. Documentation of level C1 language skills in German if German is not the language of education of the relevant first degree or university entrance qualification.

Documentation of language proficiency:

German C1

The programme requires German at a C1 level. Applicants who are native speakers of a language other than German, who do not have bachelor’s degree from a German educational institution, and who have not completed German-language vocational or professional training at secondary school must provide one of the following certificates as documentation of their German proficiency:

  • German language examination for the university admission of foreign applicants (DSH-Stufe 2)
  • TestDaF (“Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” with an above-average score (minimally level 4 in all four examination components)

English B2

The programme also requires English at a B2 level. B2 level is documented as achieved, if the “Abitur” or “Fachhochschulereife” record at least the grade “ausreichend”. Applicants with a university entrance qualification (“Hochschulzugangsberechtigung”) from the British or Anglo-American educational systems or from a country with English as its official language do not need to provide documentation of English language proficiency. Otherwise, the following certificates will suffice as documentation of language proficiency:

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE),
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimal score of 6.5 in each subsection,
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): minimal score of 75,
  • TOEFL iBT (The “Test Date Score” is accepted, not “MyBest Score”. The following are NOT accepted: TOEFL CBT, TOEFL ITP, TOEFL PBT): at least 94 points
  • TOEIC: minimum score of 485 (listening) and 450 (reading).
