Today, the most significant innovations are created by combining mechanics, electronics, and computer science. There are hardly any new products that do not follow this mechatronics approach. This form of interdisciplinary cooperation is cultivated especially in the field of precision engineering.

Typical precision engineering applications can be found in medical engineering, metrology, microtechnology, microscopy, robotics, consumer electronics, automotive engineering, and many other areas. These applications always involve the development and production of very small or precise components whose interaction leads to demanding technical challenges. In these small dimensions, which distinguish precision engineering from mechanical engineering, physical effects occur that are completely different from what we know from the ‘normal’ perceptible world.

Nuremberg, by the way, is a city with a very great tradition in precision engineering. In the early modern era, precision mechanical products were created here, such as the famous “Iron Hand” of Götz von Berlichingen – an early hand prosthesis with movable fingers, or the “Nuremberg Egg” – one of the world’s first pocket watches. Today, the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is home to a large number of companies that enjoy worldwide success with their mechatronic products and offer themselves as employers for engineers in the field of mechatronics/precision engineering.

For the bachelor’s programme, there are formal requirements that you must fulfil in order to be able to start the degree programme. There are also a number of personal requirements that you should meet.

Formal requirements

  • Documentation of a pre-study internship of at least 6 weeks’ duration
Please note: Applicants for the summer semester 2023 (only possible for applicants for admission to a higher semester) are not required to provide documentation of a pre-study internship. The pre-study internship is required for applications for admission in winter semester 23/24.

Overview of all recognised language proficiency documentation (pdf in German)

  • Required language certificates:

Instruction in this degree programme is conducted in German. Applicants who are native speakers of a language other than German, who do not have bachelor’s degree from a German educational institution, and who have not completed German-language vocational or professional training at secondary school must provide one of the following certificates as documentation of their German proficiency:

    • German language examination for the university admission of foreign applicants (DSH-Stufe 2)

    • TestDaF (“Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” with an above-average score (minimally level 4 in all four examination components)
    • Telc German C1 University (“Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule”)

Personal characteristics and skills

You should:

  • be enthusiastic about technology, mathematics and physics,
  • enjoy to “getting to the bottom” of devices,
  • be curious and creative,
  • think analytically, and
  • want an application-oriented university degree that qualifies you for a profession and employment.

Common stumbling blocks

  • Requirements in further mathematics and physics. Both the design and layout of mechatronic component requires a significant amount of abstract thinking.
  • Necessary stamina for the creation of complex designs and/or software programs
