The Social Work degree programme helps students to develop their knowledge, competences, and skills in order to become capable and responsible professionals able to work in various fields of social work.

The degree programme is designed to meet the demands of a profession that is active in an environment and in social settings that are in constant flux. The aim of the degree programme is to assist students in developing the capacity to work as independent professionals who base their actions on scientific insight and methods in the various fields of social work.

Upon graduation, “state accreditation (page in German) as a social education worker” is confirmed in the certificate.

  • Thanks to the broad range of expertise amongst the Faculty, students are able to choose from 12 different specializations.
  • They are also able to look beyond social work by participating in interdisciplinary components, such as Integrated Urban Development, which is offered in conjunction with the Faculty of Architecture.
  • The certification courses, which can be completed in the following areas of experiential education, media consulting, e-counseling and project management (see Content), present an additional special feature.
  • A special feature of our degree programme is the comparatively high degree of freedom with which you are able to shape your course within our Faculty. The framework conditions for the study programme are set out in the Study and Examination Regulations. Within this framework, you are free to compile your own degree programme overview and are not tied to any pre-defined timetable. Thanks to a multitude of specific offers, you will receive the support you need to plan your degree programme successfully.

For the bachelor’s programme, there are formal requirements that you must fulfil in order to be able to start the degree programme. There are also a number of personal requirements that you should meet.

  • Consultation certificate for individuals with vocational qualifications but no Abitur. This requires attendance at a consultation appointment. The next appointment will take place on:

  • Required language certificates:

    Instruction in this degree programme is conducted in German. Applicants who are native speakers of a language other than German, who do not have bachelor’s degree from a German educational institution, and who have not completed German-language vocational or professional training at secondary school must provide one of the following certificates as documentation of their German proficiency:

    • German language examination for the university admission of foreign applicants (DSH-Stufe 2)

    • TestDaF (“Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” with an above-average score (minimally level 4 in all four examination components)
    • Telc German C1 University (“Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule”)
