Overview of equipment used in practical laboratory courses and projects

The device is a donation from Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Weesp, The Netherlands

LC-MS/MS system API 365

The high-resolution API 365 LC-MS/MS system coupled with an Agilent HP1100 HPLC system makes it possible to elucidate the structure of organic compounds.

It is mainly used for bioanalytical questions.

SFC system

The SFC system allows chromatographic separations with liquid CO2 under supercritical conditions. By removing the gas/liquid phase boundary, an ideal combination of the advantages of GC with those of HPLC can be achieved.

Waters LC-MS system

The Waters LC/MS system, type Alliance 2690 with Integrity Thermabeam Mass Detector consists of an HPLC system coupled with a single quadrupole mass spectrometer. A mixture of substances in solution can therefore be separated by means of HPLC and the individual components can be characterized directly by means of MS.

M-110 P Microfluidizer

The Microfluidics M-110 P System Microfluidizer is used for the comminution and homogenization of solid particles in suspension, which are sheared at high pressure at a ceramic microgap and therefore comminuted. In the laboratory, microemulsions are produced, from which solid organic or inorganic materials are then produced in subsequent reactions.

In addition to this device, a large number of microreaction systems from the Institute of Micromechanics (IMM) in Mainz are available.

These micromixers are also used to produce emulsions, which form the starting point for the continuous production of cross-linked organic polymer carriers or silica gels for HPLC.

Further HPLC devices

For the chromatographic separation of substance mixtures, 11 analytical HPLC systems (MERCK-Hitachi, LiChrograph, and LaChrom series) with a wide range of detection options are available.

The HPLC devices were mostly donated by MERCK and VWR.

Detectors:

  • DAAD L4500 UV diode array (Merck-Hitachi)
  • Fluorescence L 1100 (Merck-Hitachi)
  • RECIPE amperometric detector (Merck-Hitachi)
  • Flow-through polarimeter (IBZ)
  • Flow-through polarimeter (Jasco)
  • Flow-through Polarimeter PE 241 (Perkin-Elmer)
  • RI detector (Knauer)

In addition to the preparative HPLC systems used in Organic Chemistry, a preparative system for closed-loop recycling is also available.

2 SMB systems (Licosep 12-26 and Licosep LAB, NOVASEP) are used jointly with the working group of Prof. Arlt, Dr M. Minceva at the University of Erlangen.

These systems were donated by MERCK and ROCHE.
