Bridging courses in the summer

A solid basic knowledge in mathematics, physics, and English is also essential for studying applied chemistry. To facilitate the transition into higher education, the Faculty of Applied Chemistry and the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Physics and Humanities offer bridging courses in various foundational subjects before the semester begins.

Free preparatory chemistry course

In addition, a preparatory chemistry course is offered at no cost. This voluntary course is designed for new students at university, who have limited previous experience in the subject.

It is less suitable for individuals who have

  • multiple years of chemistry classes or
  • related vocational training (e.g. CTA or chemistry laboratory assistant).

Course registration

 

The course will take place from Monday (28 Sept 2026) - Wednesday (30 Sept 2026). Location: Room KA.102, K campus (Keßlerplatz 12). 

Over three days (9.00 am - 3.00 pm) we will cover the most important foundations of chemistry:

Introductory sessions in winter semester 2026/2027

Dear students at the Faculty of Applied Chemistry,

As the new semester approaches, you are likely looking forward to hearing more about the modules ahead of you.

Please attend the respective introductory sessions, as important information will be provided during them. Group assignments for labs and practical courses in WiSe will take place during these sessions. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions. The presentations will be made available in Moodle after the sessions.

All first-year students will be registered for the Moodle course that contains information about the degree programme and the Faculty. Please be sure to read the information provided in the course and check for updates regularly.

Introductory sessions

Please be aware that a safety induction is required by law for all laboratory / practical courses. The scheduled safety inductions, which are not listed here, will be announced in the respective introductory session.

► Safety induction and preliminary meeting for the Laboratory Practice course

The mandatory safety induction and preliminary meeting for the Laboratory Practice course in the first semester will be held on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, from 1.00 - 4.00 pm in WE.012. Attendance at this session is pre-requisite for participation the laboratory course in winter semester 2026/27.

Important information for participating in laboratory / practical courses

Why do you need liability insurance?

Laboratory / practical courses are an integral part of your chemistry degree programme. Despite taking all necessary precautions, accidental damage can occur. Liability insurance protects you against the financial consequences of such incidents.
You may only participate in laboratory / practical courses, if you can present a confirmation of valid insurance cover. Please make sure you have the necessary insurance before you begin your programme.

What insurance options are available?

You may already be covered under your parents’ family liability insurance policy, for example if you are undertaking your first course of study and the policy includes practical training activities (‘fachpraktischer Unterricht’).
However, we strongly recommend taking out a specific laboratory liability insurance policy. These policies provide specific cover for damage caused in laboratory environments, regardless of whether you are covered under your parents’ insurance.

Why is a safety induction required?

Laboratories contain a number of potential hazards that can often be avoided through proper instruction and awareness. During laboratory / practical courses, you will work with chemicals and fragile and valuable equipment. Therefore, you must complete a comprehensive laboratory safety induction before carrying out any laboratory work. The induction is a legal requirement and is organised in consultation with the laboratory heads. Some of the safety inductions take place early in the semester, so please make sure you find out in good time - or during the information sessions at the start of the semester - when the safety inductions are scheduled. You may not work in the laboratories if you have not completed a safety induction.
 

Credit transfer or recognition of previous experience towards your Applied Chemistry bachelor’s degree

New students may request that previously completed coursework or other qualifications be recognised towards their degree programme requirements - in particular the time-intensive Laboratory Practice module.

This applies in particular to:

  • Individuals with relevant vocational qualifications (e.g. chemical laboratory technician or CTA)
  • Students transferring from a chemistry degree programme at another university or university of applied sciences

Please contact the chair of the examination board for the programme as early as possible, ideally before you begin courses, to discuss transfer credits or recognition of prior qualifications. Contact information is available on the Faculty website.
