Do you have an interest in technology – and do you also like design? Virtual reality, apps for smartphones and tablets, gesture control, websites, computer graphics, games, audio-visual technology – how do they work?

The Media Engineering degree programme will provide you with the expertise to develop your own applications in these areas. Alongside the general technical foundation, it is also possible to study individual topics in more depth. In addition, the relevant elements of design will be imparted, since design and usability are almost as important as the underlying technology nowadays.

Special features
  • The degree programme focuses on the technical fields that are relevant for the implementation of current topics in the field of new media. In order to achieve this, students are taught the relevant aspects of computer science and software development.
  • However, the programme is not limited to computer science; we also teach engineering subjects such as audio-visual technology, and a significant portion of the degree programme is dedicated to providing a foundation in design.
  • Unlike degree programmes that primarily focus on existing systems, Media Engineering explains the technology behind those systems and equips students with the ability to develop such systems themselves.
  • All the equipment and software systems required for the realization of current technical solutions are available in state-of-the-art laboratories and studios._

For the bachelor’s programme, there are formal requirements that you must fulfil in order to be able to start the degree programme. There are also a number of personal requirements that you should meet.

Formal requirements

  • Supplementary university selection process: (pdf in German) Subject-specific, design-related aptitude test (this is voluntary, but highly recommended, as it can be used to improve your entrance grade).

    • This subject-specific aptitude test is mainly about putting an idea (e.g. the design of a website) down on paper with pencil and ink. In doing so, you should show your basic design and creative skills, i.e. the requirements are not comparable to those of an entrance test for a design degree programme, as this is a technical/engineering degree programme.

    • Test date: Thursday, 14 July 2022, 2.00 - 5.00 pm
      Alternative test date: Tuesday, 19 July 2022, 2.00 - 5.00 pm

Overview of all recognized language proficiency documentation (pdf in German)

  • Required language certificates:

Instruction in this degree programme is conducted in German. Applicants who are native speakers of a language other than German, who do not have bachelor’s degree from a German educational institution, and who have not completed German-language vocational or professional training at secondary school must provide one of the following certificates as documentation of their German proficiency:

    • German language examination for the university admission of foreign applicants (DSH-Stufe 2)

    • TestDaF (“Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” with an above-average score (minimally level 4 in all four examination components)
    • Telc German C1 University (“Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule”)

Personal characteristics and skills

  • Interest in technical subjects (especially in the field of media, of course), as this is a technical/engineering degree programme
  • You should also have a basic talent for design

Common stumbling blocks

  • Media Engineering is a technical/engineering degree programme. Therefore, the focus of your interest should be on engineering and not on design
  • As in all engineering courses, knowledge of mathematics is necessary
  • You should, of course, also have an interest in learning other technical subjects such as programming

How do my skills measure up against the program requirements? How do I prepare myself?
