Biobased plastics

The term "bioplastics" refers to plastics that are either derived from renewable raw materials (biomass) or are biodegradable or meet both criteria. They are being developed to replace plastics made from crude oil partially or completely in the future.

The bioprocess engineering laboratory of the Faculty of Process Engineering is investigating, amongst other things, process optimization and possibilities for reducing production costs around the biopolymer polyhydroxybutyrate.
