Laboratory for BPE

The bioprocess engineering laboratories are used to train students in the teaching and research fields of biochemistry, microbiology, and bioprocess engineering.

In these laboratories, experiments are carried out in the following subject areas:

  • BVT placement, bachelor’s degree in VT, focus on bioprocess engineering
  • Practicals on the foundations of microbiology
  • Practicals on the foundations of biochemistry
  • Working on final theses

In the Bioprocess engineering laboratory, both heterotrophic and phototrophic microorganisms can be cultivated and examined using modern facilities and equipment.

Reactors & cultivation equipment

  • 1 bioreactor with 10 L working volume (Braun-Biotech)
  • 1 bioreactor with 10 L working volume (Bioengineering)
  • 2 tabletop bioreactors with 2.5 L working volume
  • 2 Minifors bioreactors with 2.5 L working volume (Infors)
  • 1 photobioreactor Labfors 5 Lux as flat-bed reactor for the cultivation of algae and phototrophic organisms (Infors)
  • Shaking incubator including photosynthesis unit and CO2 gassing for the cultivation of phototrophic organisms (Infors)

Sensors and analytical instruments

  • Gas analysis (O2 and CO2 sensors)
  • Measurement technology: pH measurement, pO2 measurement, temperature measurement, thermal flow measurement
  • Enzyme sensor (glucose, lactate)
  • Spectrophotometer UV/VIS incl. temperature-controlled cell changer for enzyme kinetics (Shimadzu)

Upstream processing

  • Cleanroom bench for the preparation of the vaccination cultures
  • Autoclave
  • Scales for media preparation

Downstream processing

  • Contifuge
  • cooled centrifuge
  • Micro- and ultrafiltration plants
  • Cell disruption by means of ultrasound and vibrating mill
  • Laboratory fluid-bed dryer (Glatt)
  • Freeze drying

The Bioprocess engineering laboratory is used for the completion of final theses and R&D projects in the following areas.

  • Bio-based polymers

  • Valuable compounds from microalgae
