The OHM-CMP regards itself as an institution that addresses the topics of materials research, production technology, and product development as interdisciplinary subjects in terms of application and for industry. With this background, a variety of industries and areas of application play an important role in the institute.

Application areas

The OHM-CMP has dedicated itself to research and development in a variety of application areas. These areas of application and their content extend into a broad range of industries.

Resource-efficient product development

The OHM-CMP conducts applied research and development with the aim of facilitating the most robust and economical procedures and products possible. It also pursues the very latest lines of research in product development, concerning robust design, bionics, and resource-saving procedures and use of materials, among other topics.

Materials science

Materials science as an interdisciplinary technology for all branches of industrial manufacturing plays a key role in the OHM-CMP. The Nuremberg Metropolitan Region and northern Bavaria form one of Europe’s powerhouses for material technologies, particularly with regard to non-metal materials.

OHM-CMP is conducting applied research and development in areas ranging from the synthesis and preparation of raw materials to the development of new materials and modifications of materials for new areas of application.

Production technology

Production technologies and new materials always go hand in hand with product development: new production technologies often cannot be realized without the use of a new material, while materials with new and improved properties require more recent production and processing procedures. The development of new products and the use of bionic principles requires the re-evaluation of existing production processes. For this reason, the development of new production methods is a key aspect of applied research and development at the OHM-CMP.

Sustainability and recycling

The sustainable use of resources is always a key area of focus in developments at the OHM-CMP. Europe’s production industries are finding that they are increasingly reliant on third countries when it comes to ensuring the availability of raw materials. For this reason, recycling of materials and the design of components to render them suitable for recycling are important areas of interest in the OHM-CMP. The OHM-CMP is also an active partner in this area in the European network EIT RawMaterials.

Industries

The OHM-CMP works on interdisciplinary technologies across industries that are of interest to all production trades. This facilitates the use of our research results in all of Europe’s key industry sectors, such as:

  • Mechanical and systems engineering
  • Automotive
  • Aviation and aerospace
  • Consumer goods
  • Medical engineering
  • Electronics
  • Energy generation and saving

Developments usually start with a certain industry-specific application in mind. The results can also often be transferred to other industries and application areas.
