The Computational and Experimental Physics (M-CEP) master's programme combines the fascinating aspects of experimental physics with modern methods of computational modeling and simulation. 

Before graduating, you can choose between two areas of specialisation:

  • Advanced Experimental Physics (AEP): If you are interested in cutting-edge experimental research in fields such as medical technology, laser physics, quantum technology, and beyond, this is the right choice for you.
  • AI and Computational Physics (AIP): This specialisation focuses entirely on leveraging computers and artificial intelligence methods to solve complex physics problems.

The Computational and Experimental Physics (M-CEP) master's programme at the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm is designed to be completed in three semesters. It is offered in collaboration with the Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) to provide a broad range of applications and extensive networking opportunities with industry partners.

Structure of the degree programme

Modules are offered in both the summer and winter semesters, and there is no set order for completing them. This gives you the freedom and flexibility to design your studies at our Faculty exactly as it suits you. The most important regulation is that you must have earned 30 ECTS credits before beginning your master's thesis.

Master’s thesis

In the third semester, you will deepen your expertise through your master's thesis. In your thesis, you will independently address a current and ambitious research or development topic. You have the opportunity to complete your thesis either within a research group at the university or externally at a research institution or industry partner.

Upon completing your Master of Science degree in Computational and Experimental Physics with above-average results, you also have the opportunity to continue your academic research and pursue a doctorate within one of the Faculty's research groups (e.g., Computational Physics for Green Energy / Life Sciences / Sensor Technology, Optical Quantum Technologies, Laser Application Lab, or Medical Technologies).

Information on admission

The Computational and Experimental Physics master's programme at the Ohm has the following admission requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics from the Ohm, or a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics with Focus Engineering from the THWS, with a final grade of 2.7 or better.
  • OR: A comparable undergraduate degree with at least 210 ECTS credits (including a minimum of 20 ECTS in physics, covering quantum mechanics, and a minimum of 20 ECTS in mathematics, covering numerical analysis), with a final grade of 2.7 or better.
  • If you do not yet meet all requirements or have fewer than 210 ECTS credits, the following measures may still lead to admission after consultation with the examination board:
    • Fulfilling conditional requirements to make up for missing knowledge.
    • Completing a 20-week internship in a relevant field (if your previous studies were purely theoretical without practical modules).
    • Providing proof of at least six months of relevant professional experience.
  • If your grades need to be converted to the German grading system, you must provide evidence that you rank among the top 50% of your graduating class.
  • Evidence of English language proficiency (language certificate) at B2 level (CEFR).
