Carbon emissions, resource consumption, and other impacts on the environment are often abstract and hard to grasp. Therefore, clear and intuitive depictions of this data is important. In this area, the NCT-NIT is focused on sustainability reporting and accounting, as well as the visualisation of sustainability aspects using XR-technologies.

At the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) the majority of the global community agreed in the Paris Climate Accords to limit climate change to well below 2°C, preferably below 1.5°C. Climate Change is a result of excessive greenhouse gas emissions, mainly CO2, at a scale beyond the planet’s capacity of carbon capture and it causes immense ecological, social, and economic damage.

To minimise future damage through climate change, companies need to improve tracking and management of greenhouse gas emissions. This includes increasing requirements for greenhouse gas accounting, as well as increased carbon prices. Since the current price of CO2 emissions is below the estimated economic costs caused by these emissions, it is expected that these prices will increase.

The NCT-NIT researches ways to register and manage greenhouse gas emissions, especially Scope 3 emissions and supports, in particular through the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Franken, companies in overcoming those challenges
