One of the most important socioeconomic challenges of our time is to achieve the objectives of a global climate policy. Current CO2 targets in the transport sector can be achieved through methods such as increasing the use of e-fuels and hybrid drives (HEV). For the internal combustion engine, which remains an important subsystem, it is necessary to further increase overall efficiency under real operating conditions in order to achieve noticeable reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, while maintaining and expanding existing technological competitive positions. The increase in complexity in the development of future powertrains can be effectively managed by enhancing virtual development (in particular real-time grey box models).

A methodology for the design of semi-physical real-time models of the overall engine system using data streaming and a Cloud Engineering Core (CEC) platform is under continuous development at Nuremberg Tech.

The communication between data acquisition and CEC is being continuously developed and expanded. The focus stays on the “in-memory” and “in-situ” analysis of all measured data without intermediate storage. The CEC enables the design of digital twins and simplifies the development, maintenance and validation of analyses. At the same time, the CEC allows for the implementation of agile software technologies.

The innovations in our approach consist in the development of the methodology for semi-physical models with the help of the CEC platform and the development of an optimized real-time hardware and firmware system for the acquisition of high-frequency measurement data.

We cooperate with industrial partners and high-tech start-ups in Bavaria.
