Support in establishing compatibility of family life with studies or work

Back in 2005, Nuremberg Institute of Technology became the first of Bavaria’s state universities to undergo the career and family audit run by the Hertie Stiftung non-profit organization, and it was re-audited for the fifth time in 2020. In June 2015, Nuremberg Tech signed up to the “Familie in der Hochschule” [Family within the university] charter, thereby joining the best practice club of the same name. By signing up to this charter, Nuremberg Tech entered into a voluntary commitment to implement the ambitious standards becoming of a family-friendly university. The compatibility of family life and studying or working has therefore become a key objective and distinguishing feature of the university. The University Service for Family, Equality, and Occupational Health (HSFG) is a central organization of Nuremberg Tech, and its task is to pursue this goal and to develop appropriate measures.

The HSFG regards itself as a point of contact for students, faculty, and employees of Nuremberg Tech for all issues regarding work-life-balance. For example, parents or soon-to-be parents can receive advice about childcare options or (financial) support options for families. In addition, members of the university with dependants requiring care are welcome to contact HSFG with questions and issues.
Besides individual counseling, we provide other services as well, including: a babysitting service, school holiday offerings for school children, hourly care for family members, or information events on the topic of eldercare. More information about specific services for students and staff is below.

The HSFG values a close partnership between teaching and research within the scope of projects, for example. Placement students regularly receive support from the HSFG.

***The German Maternity Rights Act (Mutterschutzgesetz) also applies to students who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please visit our web pages for more information.***
