Architecture and power

GERMAN ARCHITECTS DURING AND AFTER NATIONAL SOCIALISM

Architecture serves as a structural expression of power. Those in power demonstrated their abilities, determination, and assertiveness through architecture. Again and again, politicians use architecture in a targeted manner to beguile, impress, and intimidate. National Socialism in Germany also relied on architecture as an expression of power.  more about this project

Accessibility and demographic change

ADAPTATION STRATEGIES IN THE URBAN DOMAIN TO ACCOMMODATE THE MOBILITY NEEDS AND MOBILITY BEHAVIOUR OF A CHANGING URBAN SOCIETY

In the decades to come, demographic changes will require our cities to face up to new challenges. According to current population forecasts, the number of older people in German society will continue to rise. Despite the discussions that have already taken place, the complexity of this development has not been sufficiently recognized.  more about this project

BayernMINT – competent, networked, successful

COMPETENT, NETWORKED, SUCCESSFUL

At Nuremberg Tech, around two thirds of students are enrolled in STEM degree programmes. At Nuremberg Tech, increasing the graduation rate has been an important topic for more than 10 years now and is something that is supported by various measures. Examples of the measures taken include the systematic quality improvement in teaching, competence and aptitude tests reflecting the requirements of studying at university, as well as access to advising and additional instruction.  more about this project

Economics of education

EDUCATIONAL MEASURES TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES

The demographic change and associated lack of specialists poses a challenge for Germany that needs to be overcome. Academics, politicians and other parts of the population are agreed: only by initiating a suitable education offensive can the potentials and opportunities of this change be constructively harnessed. However, educational policy measures, for example optimizing the teacher-student ratio, are cost intensive.  more about this project

DIA – Digital assistance in psychosocial counseling

DIGITAL ASSISTANCE IN PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELING

Chatbots assist humans, by helping them communicate with computers using natural language as a means of requesting information or assistance. In the service and advice domain, users benefit from the fact that chatbots are available at any time to any number of persons at the same time. This makes it possible for standard questions to be dealt with efficiently, leaving human advisers to concentrate on more difficult cases that require individual responses and the necessary amount of time.  more about this project

DIAMINT - Supporting under-represented students

DIGITALIZATION OF THE STUDENT LIFE CYCLE TO SUPPORT UNDER-REPRESENTED STUDENTS IN DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN STEM FIELDS

The lack of qualified workers in the fields of mathematics, information technology, natural sciences, and technology (MINT or the STEM fields in English) has been one of the biggest problems on the German labour market for many years now. At the same time, the need for experts in STEM professions is steadily increasing, due to progressive digitalization and the demographic change. To meet this demand, a sufficient number of graduates in STEM subjects is required.  more about this project

Volunteers’ Congress 2018

VOLUNTEERS’ CONGRESS 2018

Bavaria has been successfully encouraging voluntary involvement for many years. The foundations of the strategy include, in particular, the promotion of an infrastructure encompassing all the fields of involvement, the strengthening of a culture of recognition, and the strengthening of awareness of the value of civic involvement. These aims were also addressed in the 4th Bavarian Volunteers’ Congress in 2018. The academic, practically orientated convention aims, above all, to strengthen the responsibility of persons who are involved, either full-time or as volunteers, in Bavarian associations, municipalities, and initiatives. Based on scientific standards, current issues in research on involvement were addressed and discussed in a practical way.  more about this project

Fintech - Technology-driven business models in the financial service industry

DIGITAL DISRUPTION AND BUSINESS MODELS IN THE FINTECH INDUSTRY – GERMANY AND THE USA COMPARED

In the USA and in Germany, strong growth of technology-driven business models in the financial service industry has been observed for around 5 years. But the cooperation between the so-called fintechs and established companies has not yet been the subject of much research. The first research support came in 2016 in the form of a project sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Finance.  more about this project

Internationalisation at the university

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE DEGREE PROGRAMMES

According to the Bavarian State Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, English-language degree programmes enhance the international attractiveness of universities and qualify Bavarian students for international activities in academia and business. With the project “Internationalization of universities – English-language degree programmes”, Nuremberg Tech aims to implement this future-orientated requirement in accordance with our internationalization strategy.  more about this project

Internationalisation at the university

PROMOTING ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The number of international students at Nuremberg Institute of Technology has risen in the last few years. Particularly in the initial phase of studying, however, this target group faces very diverse challenges, both with regard to studying conditions and in terms of learning requirements. In the course of the internationalisation measures, the increase in the academic success of international full-time students is an important factor.  more about this project

INTERNATIONALISATION OF THE UNIVERSITY –

For this reason, Nuremberg Tech has set itself the aim of “offering its students degree programmes characterized by research, internationalism, and practical applicability, thus preparing them for work in an international context”.  more about this project

Learning Lab - Digitally supported teaching and learning

THE LEARNING LAB – ENABLING EXPERIENCE OF DIGITALLY SUPPORTED TEACHING AND LEARNING

Teaching and learning are changing in the course of digitalization. New opportunities are opened up by mobile terminal devices, the social web, and open educational resources. Participating and benefiting from these requires new socio-technological skills – both on the part of the students and on the part of the teachers, particularly in relation to the design of new teaching concepts.  more about this project

LEONARDO – Center for Creativity and Innovation (LEONARDO)

CENTER FOR CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

A steady flow of new ideas is the lifeblood of our national economy and our society. However, disproportionately more money is invested in development, introduction, and production than in the actual ideation, investment, or creative processes. Many ideas remain stuck in the initial phase because they are not communicated or adequately documented and valued. Nuremberg Institute of Technology, in cooperation with the Nuremberg College of Music and the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts, has therefore developed a transfer strategy which focuses on the early innovation phase and its continual guidance.  more about this project

MINTerAKTIV - Graduating successfully from a STEM programme in Bavaria

GRADUATING SUCCESSFULLY FROM A STEM PROGRAMME IN BAVARIA

In the STEM subjects in particular, the high drop-out rate among students is a major problem. Incorrect expectations with regard to the degree programme itself and counterproductive studying and working habits amongst students are just some of the reasons. Nuremberg Tech has therefore set itself the objective of increasing the graduation rate, while maintaining levels of performance amongst its graduates.  more about this project

"Mut zum Studium" is a support programme for all those who want to be the first in their family to study.  more about this project

OHM-Lectureship - Sponsorship of foreign guest professors

SPONSORSHIP OF FOREIGN GUEST PROFESSORS: “OHM LECTURESHIP PROGRAMME”

In the age of globalisation, the topic of internationalisation is gaining increasing significance at universities, too. The focus has now long ceased to be on the international mobility of students; rather, the importance of internationalisation in teaching has also been recognised. Now that the international mobility of professors at Nuremberg Institute of Technology has long since become normal, the programme funding by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, Science and the Arts gives us the opportunity to invite larger numbers of foreign professors here to the university in order to advance the internationalisation of teaching at home and to increase our range of English-language courses in the long term.  more about this project

OHMfitforEU – EU STRATEGY FOR NUREMBERG TECH

EU STRATEGY FOR NUREMBERG TECH

Research and development work not only enables the energy-efficient and resource-saving design and further development of already standard applications but is also the basis for new technologies and ground-breaking innovations. The university’s vision, and its associated research topics, are connected with the most important economic sectors of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region and its future topics – analogously to the research strategy of the EU and the high-tech strategy of the Federal Government in its ten strategic key topics.  more about this project

OHM Professional School - Merging professional development and continuing education

MERGING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION AT NUREMBERG INSTITUE OF TECHNOLOGY UNDER ONE ROOF

In the area of professional development programmes, Nuremberg Tech is currently appearing on the market professionally with its “brands”, the Verbund Ingenieurqualifizierung GmbH [Association for Engineering Qualifications], the Georg-Simon-Ohm Management Institute, and the Language Center. Some Faculties, too, have set up their own independent professional development programmes. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the various profiles of the individual professional development institutes and the associated multi-brand strategy can no longer meet the  requirements of the current and, above all, future professional development market.  more about this project

OspA - Online support for care-giving relatives

RELIEF SUPPLIED BY OTHER AFFECTED PERSONS AND EXPERTS TO SAFEGUARD DOMESTIC CARE, PARTICULARLY IN THE CASE OF DEMENTIA

Most people requiring care in Germany receive regular help from their close relatives. Many of these private primary carers feel very strained by the time-consuming care. More than anything, it is the emotional strain that takes a larger toll, rather than the physical or financial strain. Particularly when caring for relatives suffering from dementia, private caregivers feel isolated and lonely.  more about this project

Quality in technology journalism

DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF A QUALITY ASSURANCE TOOL TO ASSESS AND IMPROVE THE REPORTING IN TECHNOLOGY JOURNALISM IN PRINT MEDIA, ONLINE MEDIA, AND TELEVISION JOURNALISM FROM AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE

What is the level of quality with regard to journalism and in communication? This debate has been ongoing for a long time. A self-critical approach to the topic of quality is given little attention. In view of the commercial pressure and the scarcity of resources in many editorial bodies, this self-criticism has a low priority. A great deal of content is simplified as part of the effort to ensure clarity (such as in lifestyle magazines).

QuL - More quality in teaching, advising, and supervision

MORE QUALITY IN TEACHING, ADVISING, AND SUPERVISION

Since 2012, in its project “More quality in teaching” (QuL), Nuremberg Tech has designed numerous measures for the improvement of study conditions and for more quality in teaching in four topic areas, and has been successfully implementing and developing them further. The project is the driving force for and accompaniment to the strategic subject areas of didactics, diversity, dialogue, and digitization and pursues the aim of facilitating the natural flow of these topics into daily work at the university.  more about this project

Writing groups - Development of writing skills at university

AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF AUTONOMOUS WRITING GROUPS ON FINAL THESES

To succeed in their degree, students need writing skills. By writing papers, internship reports, and final theses, they acquire in-depth knowledge which they can reflect, arrange, and communicate in the writing process. They learn how to proceed systematically, support claims with plausible arguments, understand concepts, and identify alternative solutions.  more about this project

Senior cooperatives - Situation analysis of cooperatives for seniors

COOPERATIVES FOR AND WITH SENIORS – EMPIRICAL SITUATION ANALYSIS, STRUCTURAL CONDITIONS, AND NEEDS ASSESSMENT

In the last 120 years, life expectancy in Germany has almost doubled. At the same time, family structures have changed drastically. On the one hand, most old people want to live in their own homes for as long as possible, but on the other hand, it will be more difficult in future to organize support for daily services. Higher professional mobility, divorces, childlessness, and a greater number of people living alone mean that older people in future will be dependent on even more support from outside of their own family.  more about this project

Service Learning - Student skill development

Technology acceptance - Acceptance of technologies

ACCEPTANCE OF TECHNOLOGIES – PROTAGONIST CONSTELLATIONS AND FRAMES IN THE DISCUSSION OF INDUSTRY 4.0

Innovations and technologies have crucial significance for high-tech locations and for a national economy such as Germany in general. Their success largely depends on functional communication, both in the media and by companies, as well as on acceptance of the technology by the population. In order to guarantee this, it is necessary to conduct surveys on the development of discourse and on interpretative patterns, which can be used to derive ‘instruction manuals’ for successful communication.  more about this project

Typedesign - On the fringes of decodability

TYPE DESIGN ON THE FRINGES OF DECODABILITY

Semiotics, the study of signs, is the scientific study of signs and symbols and their systematic connection, their effects, and their construction. In this case, the concept of a “sign” must be understood to be all-encompassing. Whether it takes the form of an image, a wording, some writing, body language or a feature, what they all have in common is their stature as signs. In short, a sign creates information by interpreting the consciousness of an individual. Various relations that contain signs make it possible to distinguish between three relations.  more about this project

Ventury Analytics - Contractual analysis in the case of risk capital investments

WEB-BASED ECONOMIC SIMULATION AND CONTRACTUAL ANALYSIS FOR OPTIMIZED DECISION-MAKING IN VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTMENTS

A large number of companies began life as start-ups. In order to set up a company of this kind, an innovative business idea is often not enough – especially if you don’t have the necessary capital. Investors are in a position to assist the creators of new businesses by providing risk capital. The financing contracts used when providing venture capital loans are often very complex, however, and the know-how of the parties involved usually varies from person to person. An associated problem is that in the early stages of financing, new investors come on board and each of them comes with yet another contract.  more about this project

Vstud - Ensuring academic success

BEHAVIOURALLY MOTIVATED MEASURES TO ENSURE ACADEMIC SUCCESS

A large number of students leave university without a degree, and even graduates often require longer than the standard programme duration to complete their degree successfully. There are many different reasons for this: students have part-time jobs, study abroad for a while, or are offered alternatives to a university degree. Still, for many students, long programme durations and dropping out are not desirable developments but rather consequences of somewhat irrational behaviour, in which psychological factors often play a decisive role.  more about this project

ZV Diversity - Diversity-friendly digitally supported teaching

DIVERSITY TARGET AGREEMENT: DEVELOPING SKILLS FOR DIVERSITY-FRIENDLY, DIGITALLY SUPPORTED TEACHING

Digitally supported teaching offers versatile opportunities to contribute to opening the university up to heterogeneous target groups and to the personalization of learning (diversity). For example, content can be presented more tangibly and processes better illustrated using videos. This enables more flexible learning according to individual possibilities and preferences.  more about this project
