Voice training for the ib students by the opera singer Laura Baxter

On 13th May, Laura Baxter, an American opera singer, voice trainer and performance expert gave a talk to the students of the International Business program.

Ms. Baxter has studied the effects of the voice and body on non-verbal communication and leadership for over 25 years. During this time she has assisted business people, politicians and performers across the world. As part of the second semester Intercultural Communication course, Laura Baxter was invited by Prof. Dr. Helen Rogers to share her practical experience for ‘owning the room’. In other words, empowering the speaker to be confident and have a strong presence. The lecture, which began with a wonderfully powerful live song, highlighted important aspects of successful presentations. These aspects include having both a strong inner and outer presence, having clarity as to what your personal goals and values are, and having a deep understanding of human nature. The practical exercises, which were both surprising and fun, supported the key learnings of the lecture.

A key take-away from the session was that it is not enough to be charismatic to keep an audience’s attention. In essence, the power of the voice, its energy and character have a greater impact on the delivery of any message. A valuable life lesson indeed!
