  • International flair in a personalized atmosphere: International Business is designed for about 60 students per year. Approximately one third of them are international students who add internationality to the program from the very beginning. Currently IB-students represent about 40 nationalities. 
  • Due to the relatively small number of students, another unique trademark of this program, however, is the students´ close personal contact to staff and faculty members of our department.

The standard duration of the study program International Business at Nuremberg Tech is seven semesters including the internship semester and the semester abroad, and is based on a total of 210 ECTS. The program has a modular structure and consists of three major components.

Learning objectives 

The student should learn how to set up and structure a legal contract. The fundamental knowledge of constructing a contract regardless of the type (employment contract,…) shoud be conveyed. The legal obstacles to the effective conclusion of the contract must be recognized. The special consumer protection remedies should be learned. In addition to the placement of concrete legal action, it is a key objective of this module, that students can grasp complex issues and problem-oriented arguments to find a solution. The aim is further to improve the linguistic skills by improving the legal argumentation.

  • Essentials of the general fields of civil code, contract law and property law with special emphasis on the conclusion of contracts, revocation and rescission of contracts, representation and irregular performance (especially delay of delivery and warranty in case of damaged items)

Learning objectives 

This course will provide the student with general presentation and communication skills and will help him to gain security in presenting in front of diverse audiences. The participants of this course will learn the elements, the structure and presentation tools for an effective presentation. Moreover, they will become aware of their own way of communicating and will learn how to effectively use verbal and nonverbal communication in order to successfully target their audience. 

Course contents 

Efficient preparation, logical structure of a presentation, guidelines for an effective presentation design, increased awareness of appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication, developing an individual presentation style based on personal strengths, improving self-awareness, increasing confidence and decreasing insecurity and nervousness, rules of feedback.

Learning objectives 

The goal for the students is for them to practice writing a proper academic paper and learn how to structure and research arguments scientifically, using theory to support the thesis. The methodology used is that of guided learning by doing. The doing is writing two assignments based on the theory being taught in the parallel course ‘Foundations of Business Administration’. The imported theory will be used by the student as an explanation and logic support. 

Course contents 

The time up to the first assignment is taken up with general information on writing a short essay paper. Topics covered here fall under the writing process including: foundations, avoiding plagiarism, from titles to outlines, reading and note taking. The follow-on main stage prepares the student for a complete academic paper and the contents include: title, table of contents, executive summary, introduction, literature review, use of theory, methodology, results, discussion, the conclusion and appendix. The Harvard method of referencing is adopted.

Intermediate course in Macroeconomics:  

Macroeconomic accounting; the business cycle, money and inflation, unemployment, economic policies under different exchange rate arrangements, Phillips-Curve analysis, demand vs. supply side policies, problems of demand side policies, determinants of economic growth. 

The theoretical analysis is consistently applied to real world cases.

 

Economics II

To understand the economy as a complex, self-organizing system.  To know basic concepts and techniques of microeconomic analysis and to be able to apply it to business and economic problems.

Introductory course into Microeconomics:
The economy as a complex, self-organizing system, economic theory of human behaviour, theory of the firm and market structure, implications of different market structures, game theory and strategic decision making, economic analysis of the state and economic policy, externalities and national and international environmental policy issues.

Human Resource Management can be viewed either as a support function in the organization, to provide assistance to line employees, or as a function of every manager’s job to effectively manage employees. The participants broaden their knowledge of both roles.

Second Component: Semesters 4 to 5

An important part of the International Business program is an internship abroad of 20 weeks. It significantly contributes to the student's personal and professional development and enhances his/her employment prospects. The internship is generally scheduled for the fourth semester.

By means of this internship, IB-students have the opportunity to work alongside experienced managers from all over the world and to acquire valuable professional skills. Theoretical knowledge will be applied in day-to-day business situations, in order to allow the student to accumulate a wide range of practical and managerial tools.

During the fifth semester, each student is expected to study for one semester at one of over 70 partner universities of the Faculty of Business Administration.

The study semester abroad is an exciting opportunity to gain insight into different approaches to management teaching, to experience life in a different society and culture, and to develop one's own language proficiency. It is an integral part of the IB degree program for which our students are carefully prepared during their first years of studies.

Third Component: Semesters 6 to 7

  1. By the end of the course the student will have been equipped with the tools, routines and procedures necessary in successfully preparing a case study, and will have come to appreciate the main factors necessary to be considered when analyzing cases.

Learning objectives 

The four pillars of general management (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) will be revisited. Links will be introduced from these four pillars to strategic choices and made apparent through cases.

  1. By the end of the course the student will have grasped how to develop a strategy. This development process uses an integrated planning and control system. The system affects and steers an organization, both at the strategic and operative levels. 
  2. Additionally the student will have gained knowledge of how strategy is formulated in the opposite way to the planning approach of 2. above. Here strategy will be seen as a craft arising out of      incremental experiments.
  3. The course will reach its culmination when the student grasps the  logic involved in the learning organization, the currently accepted most modern form of management.

The course will equip the student to master the core principles that underlie the operations of multinational corporations (MNC) trading throughout our increasingly interdependent and interconnected world. By the use of cases, students will be able to evaluate aspects of managing international businesses and identify adequate solutions to typical international business problems. The wide reaching effects of globalization will be investigated via practical cases.

  • Management in the MNC, globalization, differing environments, transnational strategy and economic integration.  
  • A basis for assessing the beneficial or the opposite effects of MNC countries on developing economies.  
  • Additionally the topics of ethics and culture will emphasise the human element in the international management.

Course contents 

Course contents Students must develop and carry out an independent project. This project can consist of a business plan, an event or an applied research project.

IB-students conclude their studies with the Bachelor´s Thesis either written during their 7th or 8th semester depending on the individual study progress. In dealing with a large scale international topic students will be able to work independently on a scientific issue.

The Bachelor´s Thesis can be carried out in form of a research project at our university or in cooperation with a company. The duration for writing it is 5 months.

Specialization

The International Business program allows to specialize in a particular area by earning a minimum of 14 ECTS from elective courses, by spending their internship semester in the respective field, and by examining a topic from the chosen area of specialization in their Bachelor´s Thesis.

The program currently offers the following focus fields:

The career focus “Finance” provides a comprehensive overview on main concepts in the field of corporate finance. Topics such as capital budgeting, capital structure decisions, the time value of money and further basic subjects of managerial
finance are covered in an application-oriented way. The courses lay the foundations for a career in the corporate finance-, banking-, or insurance industry.

Human Resource Management deals with the different aspects of personnel management, including recruitment, retention management, talent management, and leadership issues. The overall objective is, to develop an understanding of basic issues in human resource management and how to tackle these issues with economic methods.

The career focus International Economics provides a general introduction into the economics of globalization. Issues like what determines international trade patterns or exchange rates are tackled. Furthermore, a strong focus will be put on European economic integration.

Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.
As a specialization Marketing deals with concepts that are needed to satisfy needs of customers on the long term.
On a strategic level this comprises a thorough understanding of customer characteristics, needs (through market research) and customer buying behavior as well as the derivation of sustainable competitive advantage(s) (on the base of the prior information). On an operational level marketing treats with questions on how to create the right product / offering (for the descripted target customer group), how to price this offer adequately, how to place this offering (at locations where the key customer group would buy it) and how to communicate with customers in order to convince them to know, value and buy the product offering.

Efficient logistic networks are essential requirements for successful economies. In the course “Distribution and Supply Chain Management” the focus is placed on the logistical processes and structures within these networks, which are necessary for supplying customers.

The reason why distribution logistics is given such a high degree of importance is due, on the one hand, to the high costs involved in distribution logistic tasks. On the other hand distribution logistics is increasingly taking on a more important role in the service policy of many companies.

Students gain a strong knowledge in the tasks, specific features, challenges and success factors of the distribution systems within industry, trade and the services sector. They will also gain the ability to choose, evaluate and use relevant solutions in distribution logistics in a structured manner.

Fields of work, Job profiles

Feel confident on the international stage: International Business graduates work in leading positions in all aspects of international business. They can be consultants for corporations, managers in human resources and take responsibility for business transactions and finances. On their own or within a team they work on formulating strategies, negotiate with business partners and allocate materials and human recourses. Since the world has become a global village International Business graduates are sought after by medium-sized companies as well as global players, like Adidas and Siemens. Employment is also offered with multi-national organizations, government agencies and NGOs (non-governmental organizations mainly in the devepment aid sector).

Current labor market, starting salary

The advancing globalization of the economy brings about constant changes in international markets, and dynamic processes require highly qualified business experts who work with a long range perspective on shaping the future.

Graduates of our specialized International Business degree program are well prepared to assume leading positions in internationally operating companies, and almost all of them easily find employment (98 % within 6 months after graduation).

Salaries are highly divers depending on the employers. However, they are usually somewhat higher than a graduate of a classical Business Administration program would get, since the international component is highly valued by prospective employers.

What did you like about your International Business studies in particular?
The classes in English and the international student group were great, just like the compulsory semester and internship abroad. Most of all I liked that after a few years, I met one of my former fellow students in Singapore where we were both working at the time.

Do you have any recommendations for future International Business students?
Good grades are awesome but it’s really about experience. Put a bit of thought and preparation work in your internship and semester abroad – those are the experiences you benefit from later down the line.

By the way
After graduation, I worked as a stagehand in Berlin, Executive Assistant for the CSO of a TecDax company in Munich and as an international sales manager for a solar power plant builder in Singapore which took me to pretty much all the countries between Germany and Japan. I took a year off afterwards to turn 30 in peace and am now finishing my MSc at TH Nuremberg in finance and hope to get back into management and international travel soon.

In addition to the fact that I was able to drastically improve my English language skills I also liked the two exchange semesters abroad. Moreover, I particularly benefitted from methodical study contents such as presenting in front of many people and academic research and writing.

What did you like about your International Business studies in particular?
As I really liked the program as a whole, it is hard to decide what I liked most. One aspect that has made this program so special for me is the truly international experience from the start. Having lectures in English and working on projects with so many people from all over the world creates a wonderful, international atmosphere already at the TH. Of course having the chance to study and work in other countries is another highlight of the program. I had an amazing time and learned a lot doing my internship in New York and my semester abroad in Italy! These experiences are unforgettable!

Do you have any recommendations for future International Business students?
If you are interested in a program that offers hands on learning in relatively small groups, the opportunity to go abroad and experience other cultures in a social and work context, the IB Bachelor program is a great choice! Take advantage of the various possibilities it has to offer and mix up with the foreign full-time and exchange students coming to Nuremberg - this is what makes the program so special!

Academic options after you've earned your bachelor's degree

Upon completion of the International Business program Master programs in International Marketing and in International Finance and Economics are available. Both programs are taught in English. A German-taught alternative would be the Master Betriebswirtschaft.

There are many reasons for young people to come to our International Business program. First of all we would like to have motivated students who are internationally oriented. Secondly they should have an interest in general business studies as well as in languages. And thirdly they need to bring good grades to gain access to the program.

Formale Anforderungen

  • General Entrance Qualifications (e.g., Abitur or professional/vocational qualifications)
  • Admission to the Bachelor International Business is granted on the basis of the so-called Numerus Clausus (NC) which ranks the applicants according to their final average grade of their school graduation certificate.
    The NC - up to which grade applicants will be admitted - is not known prior to the admssion process. It rather changes with each admission process based on the number of applicants and their individual grades.
  • During the application process each applicant has to participate in an online self-assessment test in order to find out if the Bachelor International Business would be a suitable program. The results will show your individual strengths and weaknesses. Based on this feedback you may make up for knowledge gaps on your own until the start of the first semester. 

Persönliche Anforderungen

For the IB program, we highly recommend to have the following: 

  • interest in and understanding of business and economic issues
  • internationally oriented
  • personal initiative, goal-orientated
  • solid background in mathematics and analytical skills (you need to be familiar with algebra, standard functions, equation systems and inequalities,, differential and integral calculus as usually taught in school)
  • excellent command of the English language (C1 level)
  • basic skills in a second foreign language (A1 or A2 level): Spanish, French or Italian for German applicants, German for international applicants
  • Please note: Mandatory for earning credit points (so called ECTS) towards the Bachelor's degree is the successful completion of language classes at B1 and B2 Level preferably within the first three semesters. Students without any prior knowledge may indeed start at the beginner's level, but the language classes A1 and A2 would be on a voluntary basis. Consequently, those students will not be able to complete the language requirements for the second foreign language until the end of their third semester, and would have to continue with this language after the time abroad. Therefore, we strongly suggest having basic language skills before the start of your studies.

    Absolutely essential during the first three semesters are the three fundamental courses "Business Mathematics", "Foundations of Business Administration" and "English". Young students often underestimate the importance of Mathematics and therefore fail the exam. 

    For the internship each students needs to find his/her own company. To start at least half a year before the internship begins is highly recommended.
