LIFE (L'Instrument Financier pour l'Environnement) is the only EU funding programme focusing exclusively on environmental protection. The programme, set up in 1992, funds measures relating to biodiversity and environmental and climate protection. The funding area “LIFE Nature and Biodiversity” safeguards species and habitats deemed to be of Community importance. First and foremost, the programme supports the establishment and management of the European network of nature protection areas, Natura 2000. The “LIFE Environment” funding area, alongside the water, waste and air sectors, also covers resource efficiency, administrative practice, and information in the environmental sector. This includes testing of policy or management concepts for resolving environmental problems and demonstrating innovative technologies, including with reference to the connection between health and the environment. Projects in the “climate action” funding area should help to reduce or adapt to climate change. Projects in the “climate governance and information” sector are also eligible for funding. These three project categories can encompass the realisation of projects in very different sectors, such as energy, agriculture, forestry, transport, tourism, etc.
