From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the teaching of mathematical knowledge in city schools was the obligation of the “Rechenmeister” (Masters of Arithmetic), who could distinguish themselves by writing arithmetical works. The Nuremberg Master of Writing and Master of Arithmetic, Anton Neudörffer (1571–1628), is known as the author of the much-published “Anweisung in der Arithmetic” (Instruction in Arithmetic). Due to the turmoil caused by the 30-year war, his “Great Arithmetic”, which was announced in advance, was neither printed, nor has a manuscript been handed down.  more about this project

In recent years, the use of polymer optical fibres (POF) has been examined primarily for the purpose of short-distance data communications, however their use in the field of sensor technology is becoming an increasingly attractive proposition. In the “Universal Colour-Change Sensor with Polymer Fibres” project, (funded by the Staedtler Stiftung) at Nuremberg Institute of Technology’s POF-AC, research is now under way to determine how colour-change reactions can be used to detect a variety of substances with the help of POF-based sensors.  more about this project
