Collection

The Central Library, with approx. 110,000 media units (books, journals, electronic media, CD-/DVD-ROMs), is intended to provide literature to the Faculty of Design and all technical and engineering Faculties. The collections therefore focus on the subjects of art, design and photography, mathematical and basic natural scientific literature as well as computer science and all technical and engineering subjects.
The collection is organised systematically and is freely accessible. It is spread across two reading rooms on the ground floor and the basement (general plan). The current issues of the specialist journals are collected loosely in a journal reading corner in lift-up cabinets; bound volumes are in the basement. Older journal volumes (from earlier than 1961) and old textbook collections are kept in the stacks and can be ordered.

Literature search

It is best to start your search for literature in the library’s Online Catalogue (OPAC). Other search options include catalogues of other libraries, literature databases, link lists, and search engines. A compilation of relevant search entries, prepared for the different interests of the various Faculties, can be found under these links:

Literature not available in the library can be obtained via the interlibrary loan system.

BUT: Works available in the Nuremberg city area must be viewed in or borrowed from the respective library.

Copying facilities

The Central Library has two photocopiers in the Information Zone and one in the basement of the library. Copies are charged to your student ID card. There is a station available to add credit to your student ID card. Credit can only be added using banknotes.
Two book scanners are also available for scanning materials. Please bring a USB flash drive to store the scanned documents.

Computer workstations

Students can use the Central IT access code, which all students receive upon enrolment, to use all the PCs in the university, including those in the library. Please also observe the user guidelines for computer workstations!
If you have your own laptop, you can also dial into the university’s WLAN via Eduroam.
Library users from outside the university can search the online catalogue and some subject databases using the OPAC workstations, but unrestricted internet research is not possible.

Fees

Appropriate use of the library’s collections and facilities is free of charge; a EUR 2 coin must be inserted in the lockers as a deposit. Fees are only charged for copies made via interlibrary loan, requests for book return, damages, and the unauthorised use of lockers outside opening hours.

Accessibility

Users of the Central Library who have a disability and require access can reach the library via the entrance at Prinzregentenufer 37. There is a telephone on site that you can use to let library staff know that you would like to come in, and they will unlock the doors for you. Please also inform the staff how long you intend to stay in the rooms. Unfortunately, this assistance cannot be offered outside service hours.
