Training for information systems managers is characterized by linking economics-related fields (particularly business administration) and the computer science field with a focus on operational IT systems.

Occupational fields for information systems managers are based on business and management-related tasks and the opportunities that information technology offers when it comes to providing support for those tasks. The fundamental principle in this regard is that “process drives IT”. This means that information technology must not be used for its own purposes; instead, it must align itself to the tasks and requirements of business and management in order to help the institution in question to effectively and efficiently achieve its business objectives. It is the information systems manager’s job to act as the bridge between the business world characterized by business administration and the opportunities presented by information technology.

The Information Systems and Management degree programme therefore also offers both a solid foundation in business administration and its related fields and an in-depth insight into the core modules of theoretical and, in particular, practical and applied computer science.

The Information Systems and Management bachelor’s degree programme emphasizes, in a tried and tested format, a practical orientation as is typical for degree programmes at universities of applied sciences. This is evident in the team-based projects and in the bachelor’s theses, which are generally completed in collaboration with business or management. The fifth study semester is a practical semester, which students spend in a private company or in public administration.

Both the Information Systems and Management study course and professional activities place high demands on the ability to recognize the essential requirements from complex tasks with many interfaces and boundary conditions and to describe them in an analysis model, to develop a solution concept from these requirements and to realize this using information technology. Students should therefore have an interest and skills in both (mathematical) abstraction and the design of technical systems. The university entrance qualification should be combined with a sound knowledge of mathematics, German and English. In addition to specialist knowledge, the Information Systems and Management specialist needs team spirit, integration and communication skills, determination, flexibility and the ability to work under pressure.

    The language of instruction in this degree programme is German. Applicants with a different native language who do not hold a German bachelor’s degree and have not completed a German-language education at a higher education institution must provide one of the following certificates:

    • German Language Examination for University Admission for foreign applicants (DSH level 2)

    • Test of German as a Foreign Language with above-average results (TestDaF; level 4 or higher in all 4 parts of the examination)

    • Telc German C1 University

Mathematical knowledge is the basis of Information Systems and Management. First of all, you are expected to do what is actually self-evident: Mastery of the material taught in school up to the middle school leaving certificate (elementary mathematics).
