The Computer Science bachelor’s degree programme is application-based and practice-oriented. It imparts, on a scientific basis, the knowledge from the fields of practical and applied computer science that is required for the purposes of developing, deploying, and operating information processing systems. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) will qualify you to take on skilled specialist and leadership tasks.

The degree programme is technically oriented and it focuses on information technology, particularly system and application software. Early specialisation by selecting advanced electives enables students to design their own course of study. Alongside a sound knowledge of the functioning of computer systems (with hardware and software) and communication networks, the degree programme aims to teach the principles, methods, and languages used to analyse, model, and establish specifications for complex systems and processes, to design software architectures, algorithms, and data structures that adequately address the problems in question, and to implement the designed system solutions by means of computer programming.

Special features

The conventional characteristic of degrees from universities of applied sciences - practical orientation - also applies to the Computer Science bachelor’s degree programme. The course components are aligned to the challenges that will be encountered during professional activity. Since computer science is developing at a rapid pace and new areas of application are constantly being opened up, the ability to learn independently is a further important aim of the degree programme. Students will gain the ability to complete projects as part of a team and to present the results that they have achieved by means of a project paper, which is included in the degree programme overview, and an associated colloquium. Many of the required electives require students to work on smaller projects in groups of 3-4 people. Here too, students are often required to present the knowledge that they have acquired independently.

Both the Computer Science study course and professional activities place high demands on the ability to recognize the essential requirements from complex tasks with many interfaces and boundary conditions and to describe them in an analysis model, to develop a solution concept from these requirements and to realize this with the means of information technology.

Students should therefore have an interest and skills in both (mathematical) abstraction and the design of technical systems. The university entrance qualification should be combined with a sound knowledge of mathematics, German and English. In addition to specialist knowledge, the computer scientist needs team spirit, integration and communication skills, determination, flexibility and the ability to work under pressure.

Formal requirements

Overview of all recognized language certificates (pdf in German)

  • Required language certificates:

The language of instruction in this degree programme is German. Applicants with a different native language who do not hold a German bachelor’s degree and have not completed a German-language education at a higher education institution must provide one of the following certificates:

    • German Language Examination for University Admission for foreign applicants (DSH level 2)

    • Test of German as a Foreign Language with above-average results (TestDaF; level 4 or higher in all 4 parts of the examination)
    • Telc German C1 University

Personal characteristics and skills

  • Interest in the subject
  • Continual willingness to learn
  • Diligence
  • Ability to think and work independently
  • Ability to think in abstract terms
  • Willingness to work out new things independently and not to fall into a consumerist attitude that places the responsibility for imparting and acquiring knowledge solely with the teachers.
  • Ability to concentrate, even over longer periods.
  • Determination
  • Perseverance
  • Self-discipline
  • Ability to work in a team

Common stumbling blocks

Mathematical knowledge is the basis of computer science. First of all, you are expected to do what is actually self-evident: Mastery of the material taught in school up to the middle school leaving certificate (elementary mathematics).
